GBA has a new strategic plan and we’d like to share it with you!
Join us as we paddle along the Allegheny River, enjoying the natural beauty the waterway has to offer. Led by our fearless CEO, Mike Schiller–an expert paddler, naturalist, and green building expert–this adventure will be a trip both into the city’s past and future. Paddling northward from under the Roberto Clemente Bridge, Mike will stop along the way to point out various green buildings visible from the river and share tidbits about local wildlife that inhabit the waterways.
Don’t worry if this is your first time kayaking, as this is flat-water (NOT white-water) kayaking and even easier than riding a bike. There are no rapids, the boats are very stable and easy to steer, and the waters are not infested with sharks or piranhas. As an added bonus for first-time paddlers, there will be a special on-land training exercise before we head onto the river.
Space is limited, so register today to see Pittsburgh from a completely new angle! (If we get fewer than 10 participants, the trip will be canceled and your payment refunded.)
We will launch from Kayak Pittsburgh, which is located on the North Shore directly under the Roberto Clemente (6th Street) Bridge.
This will be a casual setting to connect with Mike, share thoughts and opinions, and maybe hatch a new idea for Pittsburgh or the green building industry. Mike is certainly not afraid to share what he thinks, but he also values hearing from GBA members and stakeholders as we look for new ways to grow, improve, and excel. Come with ideas about the trends within the building industry, USGBC, local government, the school community, climate change, or any other topic that might be relevant to GBA, and leave in good cheer!

Dear Reader – I am writing two blogs about Charles Montgomery, this one about his talk at the Inspire Speakers Series, which is more direct reporting, and then another one about his book, Happy City, which will include my own reactions and reflections. Inspire Speakers Series Charles entertained a crowd of 100 at the Hill […]
Welcome to GBA. This is Mike Schiller, CEO of the Green Building Alliance. I’d love for you to come share a cup of coffee to exchange ideas, share a story or two, and meet other GBA members here at our LEED-CI Platinum office on the South Side (the first in western PA when it was built!).
I’d especially like the chance to meet those of you who are new or reconnecting members – of both green building, in general, and GBA, in particular; but I’d welcome all of our stakeholders and interested parties. Let’s have some coffee (I love coffee!), and share some thoughts, informally and casually, about the trends, themes, and directions within the building industry, green building movement, USGBC, local government, the school community, climate change, or any other topic that might be relevant to GBA, both regionally and internationally.
If you know me, you know that I have opinions and am not afraid to share them, but I also value and enjoy hearing what others are thinking. We have a new strategic plan, and we are always looking for ways to grow, improve, and excel. I want to hear your thoughts and find out what keeps you supporting our organization. Thanks so much for your support, and I look forward to talking more over a cup of coffee!

Looking for some extra insight and inspiration? Wish you could learn more about our incredible Inspire Speakers Series national guests before each lecture? Eager for another opportunity to connect with GBA’s staff and partners? Here’s your chance! GBA’s CEO, Mike Schiller, will host this edition of our Inspire Speakers Series Book Club where we’ll take an in-depth look at the theories, perspectives, and expertise of Jeremy Rifkin.
We’ll read Jeremy Rifkin’s book: The Third Industrial Revolution: How Lateral Power is Transforming Energy, the Economy, and the World.
Here’s how the Book Club works:
This book club is hosted at Mike Schiller’s house, so this event gives you a very special opportunity to engage in intelligent, inspiring, and thought-provoking conversation with GBA’s fearless leader!
More About this Book:
Every month, GBA invites a remarkable nationally known speaker to present a public lecture as part of our Inspire Speakers Series. On the following day, the speaker works directly with GBA’s Green & Healthy Schools Academy in a day-long workshop. Since not everyone can always attend these great talks on the second Thursday of each […]
