EXPERIENCE

Evolution E-Cycling is a small business in Pittsburgh’s Southside that processes three kinds of waste: electronics recyclables, electronic data that need to be safely destroyed, and universal waste. After networking over snacks and beverages with Pittsburgh professionals, our afternoon event will begin with a presentation on Evolution E-Cycling’s founding and development as a company that meets a demand for electronics recycling in Pittsburgh. We will receive an overview of the categories of waste that Evolution E-Cycling processes and the amount of waste diverted from landfills each year. We will then tour the recycling plant and see firsthand the streamlined recycling processes designed to limit energy consumption within the facilities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Learn about the amount of waste diverted from landfills by Evolution E-Cycling each year.

2. Understand how a streamlined recycling process models energy efficiency best practices through reliable monitoring, similar to LEED O&M prerequisites.

3. Explore ways that organizations could include Evolution E-Cycling in their ongoing waste policies according to LEED O&M standards.

4. Brainstorm ways that organizations could utilize Evolution E-Cycling’s services to help reduce durable waste by 75%, according to the LEED O&M Solid Waste Management credit.

EXPERIENCE

Last year, the East End Brewing Company celebrated ten years of distributing its local brews to bars and restaurants in Western PA. Now you get the chance to witness the carefully honed brewing process up close and personal, from start to finish. Earn some GBCI CEUs while your at it, and see for yourself how the East End Brewing Company runs a nearly zero-waste operation, saves energy by capturing heat from the exothermic fermentation process, and reduces water use by reclaiming hot and cold water used in the brewing process. Join your fellow GBA members on a guided tour of the facilities and hear the history of a small company that proudly calls Pittsburgh home. With a stellar lineup of new beers coming out in 2015, you may want to come thirsty!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand how cooling tanks reclaim water used in the brewing process.
  2. Explain how a refrigeration system uses heat from the exothermic fermentation process to heat the production area.
  3. Understand how a recently overhauled electric system saves energy through three phase power.
  4. Explain how a diligent recycling and reuse policy for inbound packaging materials reduces landfill waste.
