EXPERIENCE

What do four Pittsburgh businesses have in common with Ben & Jerry’s and Patagonia? They’re all Certified B Corps! Come learn about the Pittsburgh businesses who have committed to meeting the triple bottom line – social, environmental, and financial – by becoming Certified B Corps. These Pittsburgh businesses have joined 1,000 other organizations across 33 countries with the goal of redefining financial success by serving workers and future generations while making a profit. At our panel discussion, we will hear a detailed introduction to B Corps, learn why each organization became a Certified B Corps, and reflect on lessons learned from the process. We’ll also have snacks and drinks waiting for you as you network with some of Pittsburgh’s forward-thinking professionals in East Liberty’s Beauty Shoppe, the first co-working office space to open in Pittsburgh.

PANELISTS

Daniel Klein, evolveEA, Communication Designer

Daniel is a strong believer in the power of visual communication as a force for social impact and informed change making. As evolveEA’s communication designer, he contributes conceptual direction, visualization, and content development to a broad array of project types and also manages the firm’s marketing efforts. evolveEA is a multidisciplinary consulting and design practice situated at the intersection of sustainability and the built environment. In 2013 Daniel led the firm’s pursuit of B Corp certification and continues to engage with the global network of B Corporations. Daniel holds a BFA in Communication Design from Carnegie Mellon University.

Jeff Shaw, Seeds Green Printing, Owner/Founder

Jeff Shaw is a master printer with over 30 years experience in the printing business. He began working in commercial printing at the age of 20 at R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Pittsburgh. After ten years in the conventional print business, observing the toxic hazards and senseless waste of the industry, he left in 1997 to start his own company, Seeds Green Printing, with a commitment to offer environmental printing services to his clients. Since that time, he has worked with leading environmentalists to make ecological green printing commercially viable. Jeff looks at each new project as an opportunity and adventure in greening the planet. With a master’s degree in divinity and two bachelor’s degrees in business and economics, he is a third generation bee keeper and bee rescue worker, is the current apiary director and board member of Pittsburgh based Non-Profit Burgh Bees.  What describes Jeff best is his commitment to the environment and to bringing excellence, integrity, and 100% customer satisfaction to every project. Seeds is honored to have receive the title “Best for the World” three years in a row from B-Lab.

JoAnn Rizzo, AE Works, ECO Chair

JoAnn RizzoWith a master’s degree in education and a background in the non-profit sector, JoAnn sparked a lifelong love and commitment to help and support others so that they have the skills and tools to create a safe and secure environment of their own making. As AE Works’ ECO Chair, JoAnn has parlayed this passion for people, creating a framework to help reduce AE Works’ footprint and nurture each team member’s potential through diverse learning opportunities. Supporting AE Works’ goal to be a sustainable, learning organization and continued work as a B Corp, her work focuses on three areas: footprint, knowledge, and governance. She champions projects to reduce energy consumption inside and outside the office and activities related to company regulations and policies, ensuring fulfillment of AE Works’ triple bottom line business model. Increasing the firm’s bottom lines in many different ways, JoAnn creates opportunities for everyone to work on projects that they are passionate about while expanding their horizons with projects that also strengthen team capabilities.

Lee Kimball, Thread, Chief Operating Officer

Lee Kimball received his B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University in Business & Spanish, with minors in Communications and Business. He started his leadership career early at Penn State, running the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Later, Lee consulted for a non-profit social and economic business incubator in Puerto Rico and managed corporate and university development for a global health NGO based in Washington, DC.

He then went on to earn an MBA from the University of North Carolina, concentrating in both Entrepreneurship and Real Estate Development, visiting companies throughout South America and Europe through UNC’s Global Immersion Program. Since then, his career has focused on business planning, financial analysis, and marketing. He and his wife Lauren live in Pittsburgh, PA, where he is a member of the Pittsburgh Triathlon Club and serves on the Board of Directors of two non-profit organizations.
