Technology in the Race to Zero Energy: Identifying Energy Inefficiencies

Session 2 of “The Race to Zero Energy” series, on June 23, was held at Carnegie Robotics in Lawrenceville. The state-of-the-art facility, formerly a warehouse from the steel era, houses the design of robotic products with heavy commercial and research applications. Here, attendees gathered to learn about new technologies impacting energy use in the building sector. This month’s session […]

EXPERIENCE

Lucyna de Barbaro, Ph.D., and Ayres Freitas, Ph.D., are inviting GBA back to their Squirrel Hill Passive House Duplex for a second tour! This is a unique opportunity to see how this stringent energy building standard, with the goal of achieving building envelope air tightness of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals, is being implemented. In addition, the project seeks National Green Building Standard ICC-700 Gold certification.

Join us on the tour, and you’ll get to sport one of GBA’s snazzy hard hats! For more information about the project, check out Lucyna de Barbaro’s Facebook page.

What is a Passive building? In short, it involves an extreme energy efficiency (targeting 60-70% energy use reduction) and performance verification that is proven through an air tightness test with rigorous passing standards. For more information, visit the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) information page.

Presenters

Lucyna de Barbaro, Ph.D., long-time environmentalist, activist, and member of Passive House Alliance US, served on the Board of Directors for the PHAUS Western PA Chapter (now PHWPA), and her husband, Ayres Freitas, Ph.D., is a Professor of Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. They are passionate advocates for improved building performance and experts on all things Passive House.

Members of Passive House Western Pennsylvania (PHWPA) may register for reduced price as Members of Partner Organization.

Please note: one half of the duplex is for sale and listed with Keller Williams Realty!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Understand the requirements of the Passive House (PHIUS+) standard

2. Understand the principles of Passive House construction

3. Explore techniques used to achieve an air-tight envelope (air tightness goal of 0.6 air-changes at 50 Pascals)

4. Explain lessons learned after a recent blower door test and methods for ensuring air tightness in the building envelope.

GBCI CMP AIA logo This event is approved for 1.5 GBCI LEED AP BD&C CEUs and 1.5 AIA HSW credits.

Partnering with USGBC and AIA, GBA makes it easy for our members to report continuing education credits.  Please provide your GBCI and/or AIA number so we can auto-report your credits (for applicable events).  Non-members can still earn continuing education credits but will need to self-report their GBCI CEUs.
