Lucyna de Barbaro, Ph.D., and Ayres Freitas, Ph.D., are inviting GBA back to their Squirrel Hill Passive House Duplex for a second tour! This is a unique opportunity to see how this stringent energy building standard, with the goal of achieving building envelope air tightness of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals, is being implemented. In addition, the project seeks National Green Building Standard ICC-700 Gold certification.

What is a Passive building? In short, it involves an extreme energy efficiency (targeting 60-70% energy use reduction) and performance verification that is proven through an air tightness test with rigorous passing standards. Lucyna de Barbaro, Ph.D., long-time environmentalist, activist, and member of Passive House Alliance US, served on the Board of Directors for the PHAUS Western PA Chapter (now PHWPA), and her husband, Ayres Freitas, Ph.D., is a Professor of Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. They are passionate advocates for improved building performance and experts on all things Passive House.
