Tree Pittsburgh Hard Hat Tour and Solar Sneak Peek
July 17 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT$10 – $15
Tree Pittsburgh is an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing our City’s vitality by restoring and protecting the urban forest through tree maintenance, planting, education and advocacy. The organization is in the process of building a new education center and nursery on five acres of land on a former steel mill site along the Allegheny River, and we’ll have a chance to see the action at this special Hard Hat Tour. The project – which is pursing LEED Platinum certification – employs modular construction as a way to reduce construction waste, achieve a tight building envelope, and maintain adaptability. Jendoco Construction is leading the construction of the project, and EcoCraft Homes built the modular sections of the building. A solar array placed on the roof will off-set energy demand, and the project is aiming for Net-Zero Energy use. Tree Pittsburgh also worked with Landforce and the Student Conservation Association to develop a trail system along the river as a way of re-claiming this riverfront property for public use.
On this tour, we’ll get an opportunity to look at the solar panels up close before they’re installed. Members of the project team will walk us through a tour of the building, highlighting all its green features. As a special bonus, we’ll also get to tour the nursery, where Tree Pittsburgh grows tens of thousands of trees from seed in an effort to increase biodiversity and genetic diversity for a more resilient forest. Trees grown in the nursery are often sold to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and local land trusts.
Don’t miss this opportunity to get a look at this amazing project before it’s completed. Tour guides will include Tree Pittsburgh’s Danielle Crumrine, EIS Solar’s Hal Saville, and GBBN’s Matt Conti. Refreshments will be included on this tour.
