Squirrel Hill Passive House Tour and Celebration
May 18 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST
Green Building Alliance has been following the progress of this home since construction began. Now, we invite our friends to visit the completed home of Lucyna de Barbaro and Ayres Freitas and celebrate their achievement.
Lucyna and Ayres have recently completed construction on their new home, which is in the final stages of achieving the rigorous Passive House certification. GBA has followed the couple’s journey, hosting Lucy and Ayres for an informational presentation about their home design (2013); leading two construction tours of the house (2015); and co-presenting the screening of Sustainability Pioneers, which profiled the house construction (2017). Now it’s time to celebrate with Lucy and Ayres since they have just moved into the home and are awaiting final PHIUS certification!
During this tour and celebration (which will include light refreshments), Lucy and Ayres will share in-depth information about their goals for the project, material selection, passive strategies, and victories and challenges they faced while completing this project. This house is a duplex, and we will be touring both sides of the house! This allows more room for guests and will give us the chance to get an up-close look at the home’s features.
A passive building involves extreme energy efficiency (targeting 60-70% energy use reduction) and performance verification that is proven through an air tightness test with rigorous passing standards. This particular home also features a green roof, permeable pavement, durable and environmentally-friendly materials, and more.
*The vacant side of the house is currently on the market if you happen to be looking for an incredibly green and efficient new house!
5:30 – 7:00 – Rotating tours and Q&A with Lucyna and Ayres. Refreshments available throughout.
1.Understand the requirements of the Passive House (PHIUS+) standard
2. Learn about challenges and successes in this particular Passive House project
3. Explore techniques used to achieve an air-tight envelope
4. Gain insights into material use, mechanical system components, and sustainability goals of this project
This event is approved for 1.5 GBCI CEUs and for 1.5 AIA LU hours.
Partnering with USGBC and AIA, GBA makes it easy for our members to report continuing education credits.
