Reclaim Spring 2018
May 12 @ 11:00 am - 6:00 pm EDT$5
Expired design samples often get thrown into the landfill when they go out of style – but they have plenty of creative life left in them!
Through their biannual Reclaim event, the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse collects and processes thousands of pounds of samples from local designers and architects, and adds in an assortment of other surplus materials like trophy parts, paper, office supplies, odds and ends, and media in their warehouse. They then open their warehouse door and invite the public to take as much as they want for a minimum $5 donation per person. This event is great for artists, crafters, educators, and DIY aficionados, but everyone is welcome to participate. Their unique and quirky retail shop will also be open during the event, so if you haven’t experienced the magic of the reuse center, please plan to stop in after Reclaim.
At the closing of its fourth year, Reclaim has diverted over 15,600 pounds of materials destined for the
landfill, with hopes that Spring 2018 edition will divert at least another 5,000 pounds.
How Does Reclaim Work?
1. Interior designers, architects, and other design professionals can make an appointment to bring
expired design samples to Creative Reuse on Friday, May 11. Donations will be accepted from
8:30am-6:30pm on that day.
2. Dozens of volunteers help process materials to salvage the usable pieces and recycle what is
left. They will also weigh and organize the donations.
3. On Saturday, May 12, the public is welcome to take as much of these materials as they wish for
a $5 donation. Teachers in particular love this event because they can stock their classrooms
with unique materials at a unbeatable price. Creative Reuse will add overstock like paints, paper,
office supplies, media, and frames to Reclaim.
4. In the last two years, 600 people have attended Reclaim events.
5. There is no fee to drop off your materials, but in order to make Reclaim sustainable for the long
term, a $25 donation is recommended to cover costs.
If you’re an architect or designer interested in making an appointment to donate materials, please contact email@example.com to make an appointment or to find out about sponsorship opportunities. If you’d like to volunteer for Reclaim, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
