Passive House at Home and Around the World Featuring the Passive House Academy’s Michael McCarthy

Come hear from an international authority on the Passive House standard. Michael McCarthy of Passive House Academy joins us all the way from Ireland to share his unique perspective and expertise on this topic.
Michael McCarthy serves as the Training Team Manager of the Passive House Academy – a certification, training, and research body based in Ireland and New York. Developed in Germany, the rigorous Passive House building standard places a focus on reduced energy demand, incredible efficiency, a tight building envelope, and the use of passive design methods to maximize thermal comfort.
Almost all certified Passive House buildings in the U.S. are residential, but the opposite is true across Europe, where the standard is widely applied to commercial buildings. The greater Pittsburgh region boasts several Passive House projects and many professionals who are prioritizing the use of this standard on their building projects. But there is still more to learn about this standard; building owners and construction practitioners alike should further investigate Passive House as a potential method when determining project efficiency goals. Michael – who will be in town to provide training to future Passive House designers and consultants – will share his unique perspective with the public at this very special lecture. Take advantage of this opportunity to hear from an international authority on this topic!
Michael will give a brief overview of the origins of Passive House and share some colorful case studies from different applications (both residential and commercial) of the standard from around the world. He’ll also give some insight into considerations for our specific region, including applications of Passive House for multi-family projects.

About our Speaker:
Michael McCarthy serves as the Training Team Manager for Passive House Academy: Ireland. As an engineer by profession and regarded as “the numbers guy” in Passive House Academy, Michael prides himself in being a methodical problem solver who is able to provide knowledge on both envelope and mechanical systems as well as being unflinching in the face of complex conundrums. Michael’s teaching style is hallmarked by his unique ability to seamlessly jump from teaching novices, through contractors, designers to building scientists. He is known for his knowledge of international standards as they relate to energy efficiency with particular expertise in airtightness and blower door testing.
This event will be hosted in the Marquis Conference Room at Scott Hall in the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation.
This lecture is co-presented by Green Building Alliance and Passive House Western Pennsylvania, with generous support from the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund. It’s also part of the Carnegie Mellon SoA Graduate Exchange Lecture Series and as such, all CMU students and faculty will receive free admission (but please register in advance).
