Passive House 101

Join Green Building Alliance and PHWPA for an introduction to the Passive House standard. Speakers Kara Magoolaghan and Rick Eckstrom will present the five core principles of Passive House and explain how they work together to create an exceptionally efficient building, provide applications of the standard in Western Pennsylvania, describe economics of the building over time and explain how Passive House can work for all.

Kara’s passion for sustainability and interest in energy efficiency drove her to Green Building Alliance, where she works to execute educational events for practitioners of high-performance buildings. Kara holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Binghamton University and is pursuing her law degree at Duquesne University. Kara is a Certified Passive House Designer, TRUE Zero Waste Advisor, and a LEED Green Associate.
Rick has worked as a structural engineer, as a program director of Civil Engineering Technology at the Technical College of Lowcountry, and has more recently served as a Passive House expert, sitting on the board of Passive House Western PA and leading Green Building Alliance’s Passive House trainings. Rick holds a Bachelors of Science from Cornell University and a MSCE in Structural Engineering from the University of South Carolina.
