MuseumLab is the newest addition to Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and it’s an example of great synergies of building performance, historic preservation, occupant health, and accessibility. The building was designed to meet LEED, WELL, 2030 Goals, and Universal Design standard, all while preserving the magnificent historic details of what was once the Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny. Did we mention this was all done by a women-led project team? The owner, project manager, architect, and contractor on this project are all women.

Hosted on Zoom, our virtual tour will be led by MuseumLab project director Chris Cieslak (who is now GBA’s Vice President of Strategy and Impact) and construction project manager Christi Saunders. The pair will share a behind-the-scenes, exclusive look into the construction and design of the renovation. You’ll get a look at Gymlacium in the Stacks, a three-story interactive artwork featuring woven rope sections integrated throughout the steel bookshelves of this former library, where visitors can climb, slide, swing and hang out. You’ll also see the Make Lab, a makerspace with tools and materials for working with wood, fiber, recycled materials and more; Studio Lab, featuring rotating artwork and activities related to an artist or theme; and Tech Lab, with augmented and virtual reality projects, a mobile recording studio and interactive artwork.

Chris and Christi will provide details about the revitalization of much of the original structure of the 1890 Carnegie Free Library and the multiple green building guidelines they have followed to ensure a sustainable and healthy space for everyone who uses it, including the students and staff of an embedded middle school.
