About this Event

Mill 19 on Hazelwood Green is not only an incredibly interesting example of existing building reuse, but it is also home to the largest single-sloped open-frame solar array installation in the country. The building – one of the first major projects to be completed on the city’s last large brownfield redevelopment – serves as a unique look at Pittsburgh’s past and future, and its legacy of sustainability leadership.

Join Green Building Alliance and the Master Builders’ Association Green Builders Committee as we explore the outside of Mill 19, learn about construction challenges and solutions, how this project contributes to the Hazelwood Green site, and gain insights into the building’s massive 5,000-panel solar array.

Originally built in the 1940s, the steel skeleton of the Mill 19 building was maintained during recent renovations while a new structure pursuing LEED Gold certification was built within. Outdoor and indoor spaces converge through a unique corridor flanked with glazing and greenery along an exterior pathway. Atop the building, a record-breaking solar array covers the length of the roof and produces 2MW of power. Located next to the Hazelwood Green Plaza and home to Carnegie Mellon University’s new Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute and Catalyst Connection, the building offers a nice space to gather and enjoy the Hazelwood Green site, with a covered porch and amphitheater attached to it. Join us for an in- depth look at this building, its solar array, and its contribution to sustainable development in Pittsburgh. To get a sneak peek of the project, click here.
