Meeting the Challenge of Living Buildings in Pittsburgh
January 24 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm EST$10.00 – $20.00
What if every single act of design and construction made the world a better place? The Living Building Challenge, the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard, visualizes this ideal for the built environment and calls for the creation of building projects at all scales that operate as cleanly, beautifully and efficiently as nature’s architecture.
Only 22 buildings around the world have met the stringent requirements of the Living Building Challenge… and three of them are in Pittsburgh (with more local projects in development). There are many more project teams that want to work on these groundbreaking projects, but aren’t familiar enough with the program to develop a plan or propose it to their clients. Now that we have successful demonstration projects in our region – and a growing local set of tools and expertise – it’s time for another look at the Living Building Challenge!
In partnership with the International Living Future Institute, GBA will lead a back-to-basics introduction to the philosophy and components of the Living Building Challenge to build on its momentum in the Pittsburgh region. It is important to understand the reasoning behind the requirements, and what both owners and project teams can expect if they pursue the Living Building Challenge. We’ll explore how local projects were able to overcome certain barriers, point to resources, and answer your questions.
The event will be hosted at the Frick Environmental Center, one of our city’s certified Living Buildings. This session will be useful to architects, contractors, engineers, or other project team members that have been curious about the Living Building Challenge and want to gain the knowledge and tools to start pursuing it! This event is also great for green building enthusiasts who are not yet familiar with this standard.
About Our Presenter

Our region also has an active group of building professionals and owners who are passionate about the Living Building Challenge and ILFI’s other programs. The Pittsburgh Living Future Collaborative meets on a regular basis, provides Open Office Hours for project teams in need of assistance, and partners on education opportunities.
