The WELL Building Standard has just crossed the 100 million SF threshold for project registration. As a performance-based standard, WELL includes requirements that the project actually operates in accordance with the standard in order to achieve certification. What many teams are discovering in the process of pursuing WELL is that the evolution from prescriptive standards, like LEED, to performance standards like WELL, introduces a new paradigm into the design process. “How will my building perform?” and “what happens if it doesn’t?” are questions that have to be analyzed in the design process.
Pete Jefferson (Forte Building Science) will share strategies that his team is using on WELL projects to achieve the performance requirements, particularly in the areas of Air, Water, Light and Comfort. Projects that will serve as case studies include existing commercial interiors, a new middle school, speculative offices, and a historic building renovation.
This event is part of a special Road to Greenbuild initiative of the US Green Building Council, as a way to build awareness and momentum for the Greenbuild Expo in Boston from November 8-10. Pete was one of the first in the U.S. to obtain WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP™) credentialing and leads a team that specializes in Project Planning, Research & Analytics, Commissioning & Testing, and Certifications. He brings a whole-systems perspective and a deep knowledge of sustainable approaches to his projects to achieve high-performance buildings. Pete draws from his engineering background to look at the building as an integrated system, where climate, architecture, and systems must work harmoniously to yield the best outcomes for owners, operators, and occupants. In seventeen years of practice, his work has produced numerous LEED-Platinum and Net-Zero achievements. He is currently consulting on over ten projects pursuing WELL certification, representing several million square feet of commercial, industrial, and educational space.
