About this Event
At this edition of our Health in the Built Environment Series, we will explore two different aspects of designing and operating for wellness: strategies that support physical activity of building users, and designing for shelter-in-place emergency preparedness.
Many components of building design and operations can encourage users to move their bodies, whether it be locating in a building that is reachable by multiple forms of human-powered transportation, opportunities for connecting with nature, or enabling healthy choices like using the stairs instead of the elevator.
Michelle Allworth from Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will share examples of strategies the non-profit organization has used to encourage physical activity of visitors and employees. In particular, Michelle will share some background on the evolution of how these strategies have been incorporated into different types of healthy and high-performance building standards throughout the years (from LEED to WELL to the Living Building Challenge), including in the recently completed Exhibit Staging Center. This building offers a look at social equity in terms of who gets access to healthy buildings, and incorporates strategies for both physical and mental health through the inclusion of a meditation room.
In addition, the group will learn about some best practices for incorporating shelter-in-place emergency preparedness into building design and operations. Project and operations teams should proactively consider how to plan for emergency scenarios in an effort to maintain a resilient building and support the health and well-being of all users. Join us for the conversation!
This event can be self-reported for 1.5 GBCI CEUs.
About our Health in the Built Environment Series
While health and well-being are embedded into nearly all the work we do at Green Building Alliance, we host this Health in the Built Environment series each year to more explicitly raise stakeholder awareness of the critical ways in which human health intersects with climate, social equity, and the built environment that surrounds us.
This year’s series will take place over the course of one week. We will host online morning workshops on a variety of topics from Monday through Thursday, and then we will host an in-person networking meetup with participants and presenters from the workshops on that Friday evening to celebrate the finale of the series. Participants are welcome to sign up for one workshop or all of them, but you must attend at least one workshop in order to attend the in-person finale.
