Experience

Join CCI, Diagnostic Energy Auditors of Western Pennsylvania and Green Building Alliance as we present the Building Performance Institute’s new Building Science Principles class, a certificate program designed for people who wish to learn more about Building Science but don’t need to be certified Energy Auditors.

This class lays a foundation of understanding for the architects, building trades, Vo-tech students, or adult student at any level. It could also benefit Home Inspectors, Real Es-tate Agents or Appraisers, government officials, and those working in weatherization programs. No field experience is required for this program, and no field test is required.
Topics covered include:

  • Principles of Energy Transfer
  • Basics of Airflow and Infiltration
  • Building Structural Elements
  • Moisture Control
  • Insulation Basics
  • Mechanical Systems and Ventilation
  • Health and Safety Issues
  • Conservation Strategies

 

This class will be taught by Rhett Major  and will be presented in the classroom and includes BPI’s Building Science Principles book ($119.00 value). The class concludes with a 2 hour on-line exam ($99.00 value) If the student successfully passes the open book test, BPI will award the participant with a Building Science Principles® Certificate of Knowledge.  This class is approved for 6 BPI CEU’s and 12 ASHI CE’s.  (Note that this is not an equivalent to BPI certification.)

Learning Objectives

  1. Acquire a better understanding of how the physical laws of nature intersect with our built environment.
  2. Be able to define a building’s thermal envelope, and how it is insulated and air-sealed.
  3. Become familiar with moisture management, and effective approaches of dealing with it.
  4. Recognize various upgrade strategies for our local housing stock.

This event is approved for 12 GBCI CEUs and for 12 AIA HSW hours.

Partnering with USGBC and AIA, GBA makes it easy for our members to report continuing education credits.  Please provide your GBCI and/or AIA number so we can auto-report your credits (for applicable events).  Non-members can still earn continuing education credits but will need to self-report their GBCI CEUs.

 

About the Speaker

Rhett Major, The Energy Doctor, a local expert with over 28 years of experience in Building Science, Energy Efficiency, and the building trades. He holds Certifications from BPI, RESNET, USGBC, PHIUS, and The InfraRed Training Institute. He has been training extensively since 2009, and brings real world experience to the subjects he teaches.
