Since relocating from New York City to Pittsburgh in 2003, Alan has served as principal-in-charge for an impressive portfolio of LEED certified projects at CJL Engineering, including the Pittsburgh Project Guesthouse (Gold); PNC Branch Banks (Certified through Gold); Point Park University Dance Studio (Gold); and Green Building Alliance’s offices (Platinum). His current projects include the Phipps Center for Sustainable Landscapes (LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge), East End Cooperative Ministries (Platinum), Pittsburgh Green Innovators Energy Innovation Center (Platinum), and International Union of Operating Engineers Local #66 Training Facility (Gold).
Over three decades ago, Alan began his career at the global engineering firm Flack + Kurtz. He developed the computer energy and systems model for the 8.5-million-square-foot World Financial Center complex in NYC and led development of the company’s green practices.
A founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Alan served as a director on the USGBC board for 12 years. He also initiated and oversaw the development of USGBC chapters and served as the USGBC national liaison to ASHRAE for seven years. Additionally, he was an advisor for the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system, the New York State Green Building Tax Credit Bill, the New York City High Performance Building Design Guidelines, and the federal Department of Energy’s Sustainable Building Technical Manual.
A frequent speaker and author on green building issues, Alan is an AIA Professional Affiliate and a former board member of several regional and national organizations, as well as a founding member of the ACE Mentor Program, which introduces high school students to careers in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. This is Alan’s second stint serving on GBA’s Board of Directors.
